The Network of Journalists for Responsible Fisheries in Africa (Rejopra) fisheries reporting grant aims to supports African journalists interested in sustainable fisheries on the African continent.
The 2019 fisheries reporting grant is dedicated to promoting gender equality in Africa’s fisheries sector. This is in recognition of the one of the guiding principles of the FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries (VGSS) that “Gender equality and equity is fundamental to any development”.
Furthermore, the network takes into consideration the admonition of Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General that, “confronting gender inequality is essential to achieving the ocean-related Goal and targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We must ensure an end to unsafe work conditions and guarantee that women have an equal role in managing ocean-related activities.”
Rejopra will provide reporting grants to African journalists to cover stories on the participation of women in Africa’s fisheries sector. This in keeping with the FAO’s VGSS that “recognizing the vital role of women in small-scale fisheries, equal rights and opportunities should be promoted”. While the participation of women in fisheries is the focus of the 2019 grant, Rejopra will also provide grants to journalists interested in reporting on fishmeal factories in Africa.
