Gaossou Gueye, president of the African Confederation of Artisanal Fisheries Professional Organizations (CAOPA), who was re-elected to another term of five years, has said that the advantage that old age holds in Africa’s artisanal fisheries will be a thing of the past.

Guèye spoke to journalists after the announcement of his victory at the ongoing 9th General Assembly of CAOPA in Saly, Senegal

“Youths have an important role to play in the upliftment of the artisanal fisheries sector in Africa,” said Guèye. “I have been working with the Secretary-General of CAOPA to identify young people and to put in place a youth-coordination [unit]that will prepare them to take over. It is with them that we prepare for 2022.”

Gueye noted that early engagement with youth on the African continent can ensure a responsible and sustainable small-scale fish sector on the African continent.  Guèye promised that CAOPA under his leadership, will strive to develop a sub-regional market and create access to investors.

“Our ambition is to see how do we go about developing sub-regional market and access trade to better actors,” said Guèye. “We also want to show out the plights of Africa on the International World Fisheries Year in 2022. Africa should be playing a very important role as a leader in terms of artisanal fisheries,” said Guèye.

Additionally, Guèye reaffirmed that CAOPA will continue to work to improve the working condition of women in every spectrum of Africa’s artisanal fisheries: “we have to see how we can work on the working conditions of women in the artisanal fisheries sector particularly, the processors, wholesalers and the market women”.

Mr. Guèye who has completed a three-year term will now spearhead the affairs of CAOPA for a term of five years, a change in power-tenure that member’s organizations of CAOPA have decided. The change is to give more time to the Executive Board of this continental organization to carry out activities in the interests of Africa’s artisanal fishers, according to delegates to the  9th General Assembly of CAOPA in Saly, Senegal.
